Yes, VIA was back in Las Vegas in January during CES 2008 with a spectacular array of exciting platforms and systems at the two media events: Lunch@Piero's and Showstoppers
|

For the first two days of CES 2008, Piero's Restaurant is transformed into an innovation showcase, and VIA leads the way demonstrating lots of new and exciting products and partner systems. The event theme this year, "Small is Beautiful", reflected VIA's focus on shrinking the x86 platform, enabling a new generation of creative and ultra compact system designs and, in some cases, whole new product categories.
In this short video, VIA's Tim Brown provided an introduction to the event and an idea of what the media could expect to see from VIA this year's event. |
The ShowStoppers media evening is held in the Wynn Hotel and Casino and provides a forum where reporters and industry analysts can discover the future of business, consumer and lifestyle technologies. Once again, in a short clip, Tim Brown gives a run-down of what VIA showcased at this year's ShowStoppers.

"Small is Beautiful" in Las Vegas
Here are some of the innovative new systems that caught the attention of journalists from around the world in Las Vegas this month:

Ultra Mobile Devices (UMDs)
As users look for a new breed of device that fuses communication, content and computing all in one easy to carry package, the Ultra Mobile segment is creating exciting opportunities for entertainment, productivity, and communication devices with a portability never before thought possible. Embodying all the attributes necessary for such a segment, the VIA C7-M ULV processor was developed from the ground up for ultra power efficient and cool running operation, outclassing the capabilities and performance per watt of any other x86 processor on the market. The VIA Ultra Mobile Platform also incorporates low power chipset solutions boasting rich feature integration and superb video quality through the Chromotion Video Engine.

Watch as some of our customers explain their innovative new products, including Lisa Park from Wibrain with the brand new Wibrain B1 UMD, while Mark from E-Lead demonstrates the innovative Noahpad, which also garnered considerable interest at the event.
A number of UMDs based on VIA's mini-note reference design, the NanoBook, were on display, including the MAXDATA Belinea s.book1 with its removable Bluetooth Skype phone module, the Packard Bell EasyNote XS with integrated webcam, and the Everex CloudBook running the new gOS Rocket operating system.

Rounding out the UMDs were TabletKiosk with their TabletKiosk eo v7110, and OQO with the ever-popular OQO model O2. |

Mobile Internet Devices (MID)
By pioneering in the miniaturization of the x86 processor platform, VIA has helped enable a new category of handheld system: the Mobile Internet Device, or MID, which is a full featured x86 computer shrunk down to palm size.

Slated for commercial release later this year, the remarkable MTube was unveiled at the Lunch@Piero's media event. Smaller than a BlackBerry, the MTube is being developed by Taiwan's Science and Technology Advisory Group and is based on VIA's credit card-sized Mobile-ITX board. Features include a 1GHz VIA C7 CPU, 2.8-inch/640 x 480 touchscreen, 8GB of flash memory and Linux-based OS. VIA's Bjorn Stromberg from Ultra Mobile Life has a video taking a quick look at the MTube. |

Green Computing
With an increasing media and business focus on green computing, VIA's ultra low power processor platform has been attracting more and more attention. Flying the green flag at this year's event was Zonbu, whose CEO, Gregoire Gentil showcased both an ultra power efficient desktop pc and a sleek new notebook.
Running a fresh new OS based on Gentoo Linux and utilizing a hassle-free storage and support subscription service that guarantees access to your information anytime, and from any computer, the Zonbu desktop has a maximum operating power of just 15 watts – a fraction of the electrical draw of a typical desktop PC.
Take a look at the video taken at Piero's to hear Gregoire outline the many benefits of VIA-based Zonbu systems.

Embedded Platforms
VIA embedded processor platforms have been designed to inspire a new generation of embedded and personal electronics devices that extend the x86 architecture into new applications, new usage models and new markets. Demonstrating its leadership in integration and miniaturization, VIA displayed a range of new and popular VIA EPIA Mini-ITX, Nano-ITX and Pico-ITX products.

Also on show was the new VIA ARTiGO Builder Kit, launched in December. Measuring a mere 15cm x 11cm x 4cm high, the VIA ARTiGO is specially designed for the VIA EPIA PX10000G Pico-ITX board, and enables enthusiasts to build a full featured PC that's smaller than a paperback book. A video featuring the ARTiGO is available on Technovoyance.com. |

Remarkable Case Mods
World renowned case modder Jeffrey Stephenson delighted the crowds at the Lunch@Piero's event with two amazing new designs created out of his signature wood construction.
The G-Metric Nano is a beautifully tooled art-deco PC with a hard Pennsylvania cherry veneer and inlays of walnut, mahogany, and basswood, all built around the VIA EPIA NX15000G, the latest of the Nano-ITX boards that measure just 12cm x 12cm.

However, Stephenson's pièce de résistance was undoubtedly the Pico Bayard. Drawing influence from the famous French clock designer of the 1930's, the Pico Bayard is a digital photo-frame device powered by the VIA EPIA PX10000G Pico-ITX board and incorporating an 80 watt Pico PSU and an 8" touchscreen LCD/TFT set at 800 x 600.

It's clear to see why Jeffrey has such a keen following, with his unique use of woods to create beautiful artifacts that also happen to be full computers, and both systems were widely acclaimed by the media. Here's a video interview with Jeffrey taken at the Lunch@Piero's event where he explains his creations. |

Digital Signage
Digital signage is all around us in today's modern world, whether as information systems in airports and stations or fully interactive systems with touchscreen displays. With the demands for more sophisticated functionality and better video and audio, the x86 platform is finding increasing favour among digital signage developers.
Danoo is a rapidly-growing, place-based media network that reaches consumers at natural pause points in their favorite locations. Great for businesses looking to target their customers by location, demographic or time of day, Danoo attended Lunch@Piero's with a digital signage system that showcased its dynamic advertising platform.
