VIA pc-1 Community Solutions

Empowering emerging markets with ICT solutions that boost regional economic growth and give local communities, through education, the skill sets needed to compete in today's global economy, requires a blend of technologies that balance functionality and low cost of operation with the computational performance to run the same applications used by developed nations. To be sustainable, technology used in these solutions must overcome a number of unique challenges such as expensive and intermittent supply of power, extreme environmental conditions and inadequate regional infrastructure to support ICT. As part of its comprehensive global strategic initiative aimed at enabling the next one billion – the VIA pc-1 Initiative – VIA has designed innovative community solutions that overcome the unique challenges of emerging market community deployments to empower individuals with the right technology to compete in the global economy.

Based on the VIA PC Clients and VIA pc-1 server/client architecture, VIA pc-1 Community Solutions combine system and application flexibility and affordability with industry leading low power consumption, rich integration and ruggedized chassis's that withstand environment extremes such as heat and dust to deliver a smooth user experience. Leveraging the ease of manageability, strengthened security and shared access usage model that a server/client infrastructure offers, VIA pc-1 Community Solutions use VIA pc-1 Server and VIA pc-1 PC Clients to enable emerging market deployments to be managed remotely from any location in the world, have a reduced need for on-site maintenance and facilitate easy central storage of user data and applications.

Complementing the server/client infrastructure, VIA pc-1 Community Solutions offer a range of VIA PC Clients that deliver the same user experience as VIA pc-1 Clients, but incorporate such features local storage.

To showcase this innovative approach to solving the difficulties of deploying ICT in emerging markets and demonstrate how ICT can be improve education and stimulate local economic development, VIA, under a program initiated by the APEC Digital Opportunity Center group, has donated a complete VIA pc-1 Community Solution for an ICT center at Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry (TUAF) in Vietnam, in a jointly-run project with Cornell University and the Thai Nguyen University. This facility, called the VIA pc-1 ICT Center, will be established within TUAF, which is located in the poorer Northern Mountainous Area of Vietnam, and shall benefit the university students as well as local disadvantaged youth.
