VIA Carbon Offset Program – Reforestation |
 |
VIA Carbon Offset Programs offers a range of investments designed to sequester or offset carbon dioxide produced by the VIA line of Carbon Free products. One of these programs utilizes reforestation projects to achieve this goal of carbon neutrality.
Tree planting – As the world's first Carbon Free processor, the VIA C7-D has also accomplished another first as the most efficient desktop processor with leading performance per watt and a maximum design power of just 20 watts @2.0GHz. With such efficiency, it not only provides a dramatically reduced power draw, it enables us to easily neutralize the small amount of carbon it may produce. Through the planting of trees in the region in which the processors were purchased, VIA's Carbon Offset Tree Planting Program is able to sequester the amount of carbon dioxide that the C7-D processor could produce if it were to be powered by traditional electricity grid power sources, such as oil, coal or gas.
For this program, environmental groups such as Carbon Footprint supervise the planting of the trees in relation to the number of processors sold. The most recent planting was conducted by Carbon Footprint in County Durham, England, where 100 broad leaf trees were planted, which are effective for the sequestration of 25 C7-D processors over three years, and of 750 VIA C7-D processors over the course of the average tree's lifetime.
To emphasize the power efficiency of the VIA C7-D processor, VIA has established a new benchmark for the industry that measures power efficiency by number of trees: TreeMark™, which shows the number of trees required to offset any given processor, and simply illustrates the importance of power efficiency.
