VIA Surfboard NetNote Edition Platforms

Hitting the Mobility Sweet Spot

The new VIA Surfboard NetNote Edition Platforms have been specifically designed to enable a new category of NetNote mobile computing devices.

The first completely consumer-focused ultra mobile device, NetNotes combine the portability and affordability of a netbook with the functionality and HD entertainment capabilities of a notebook in a light, high performance clamshell mobile device with long battery life, screen sizes of between 10.2" – 12.1", and support for flawless playback of high bit-rate 1080p HD video.

Combining the highly-integrated VIA VX855 media system processor with a choice of VIA C7™-M ULV and VIA Nano™ processors, the two new VIA Surfboard NetNote Edition Platforms provide high-quality, energy-efficient and feature-rich "ready to build" solutions for manufacturing NetNote devices.

All VIA Surfboard platforms meet demand for better visual computing from mobile devices by providing flawless playback of high bit-rate 1080p HD video, which along with support for internal display resolutions of up to 1366 x 768 pixels and external display resolutions up to 1920 x 1440 pixels, and a wide range of connectivity options, allows for a rich on-the-go multimedia experience.

Advanced HD Video Playback

The VIA VX855 Media System Processor is a power efficient, highly integrated all-in-one chipset that introduces the advantages of next-generation high-definition video compression algorithms to ultra-mobile devices. The VIA VX855 enables the VIA Surfboard C855 to support hardware acceleration of leading video standards including H.264, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 and VC-1 at the highest bit-rates and resolutions, greatly reducing the workload and thus the power consumption of the processor.

Low Power, Long Battery Life

VIA processing components enjoy a strong market reputation for cool operation and ultra-low power draw. Thanks to the highly efficient heat dissipation of the VIA C7-M processor and the 2.3W TDP of the VIA VX855 chipset, the VIA Surfboard C855 offers system developers a cool, quiet and low power foundation to create innovative designs around.

And with battery life one of the most desirable features in today's mobile devices, the VIA Surfboard’s ultra-low power consumption and support for power management features such as screen auto-dim, allows for an even longer, fuller mobile computing experience.

Ready-to-build Solution

VIA's expertise in component design and fully integrated reference platforms assist developers in reducing both time-to-market and R&D expense for new products.

Since its establishment in October 2008, over 40 companies in the VIA Global Mobility Bazaar (GMB) Alliance, have developed more than sixty mobile systems based on VIA SurfBoard platforms. All have expressed support for the new NetNote category, and the first NetNote products are expected to be introduced into the market in September 2009.
