VIA K8M890 and Vista
The K8M890 chipset has been awarded the Windows Vista Basic logo. The testing involved in the certification process guarantees a reliable and trouble free installation and usage of the Ultimate, Enterprise, Business, Home Premium and Home Basic editions of Microsoft Windows Vista.

The VIA K8M890 chipset with its Integrated Graphics Processor (IGP) and PCI Express connectivity is providing leading OEMs and System Integrators a highly flexible platform with which to build the next generation of innovative and affordable mass market PCs.

As the first chipset to feature the VIA Chrome® 9 IGP (Integrated Graphics Processor) core, the VIA K8M890 delivers DirectX® 9 graphics support with hardware pixel shaders to meet the requirements of the upcoming Windows® Vista™ operating system, and rising high definition video requirements. Integrating support for the latest PCI Express graphics cards and high speed peripheral devices, the VIA K8M890 supports the full range of AMD Athlon64™ and AMD Sempron™ processors.

The core of the VIA K8M890 North Bridge lies the all new VIA Chrome® 9 IGP, delivering a rich visual experience through the implementation of innovative features such a 128 bit 2D/3D engine with dual pixel pipeline. The K8M890 also features extensive display support for all HDTV output formats including 1920x1080p when coupled with an HDTV encoder, and additional advanced graphics capabilities include the Chromotion Video Display Engine, comprehensive de-interlace support, and DuoView™ for enhanced productivity and presentation capabilities. The K8M890's highly flexible architecture also allows for an external PCI Express x16 port for optional graphic card upgrades.


The VIA K8M890 integrates VIA's Hyper8™ technology supporting a 1GHz/16-bit (upstream and downstream) HyperTransport processor-to-chipset link, that delivers up to 8GB/s of bandwidth to help ensure all AMD64 processor-based systems achieve their full performance potential.

Featuring the VIA DriveStation™ Controller Suite, the VIA VT8251 South Bridge provides the most comprehensive support high-performance integrated storage interface technologies available on the market today. In addition to enabling high-speed 150MB/s dual channel connections to Serial ATA II Hard Drives while retaining support for up to four Parallel ATA-133 devices, it combines exceptionally fast disk data transfer rates and optimal data integrity with easy installation and manageability through V-RAID native RAID controller integrated into the South Bridge supporting multiple RAID Level 0, RAID Level 1, RAID 0+1, RAID 5 and JBOD configurations.

The VIA VT8251 also features the VIA Vinyl™ Multichannel HD Audio Suite for superlative integrated and onboard eight-channel surround sound, and offers a host of high-bandwidth connectivity options, including support for the VIA Velocity Gigabit Ethernet companion chip, integrated 10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet and up to eight high-speed USB 2.0 ports.

The VIA K8M890 benefits from VIA's unique V-MAP (VIA Modular Architecture Platform) architecture that facilitates faster product development and speeds up time to market, and features the high-throughput Ultra V-Link interconnect running at speeds of up to 1GB/s between the North and South Bridge.

    Delivering data throughput speeds of up to 1GB/s from the VIA VT8251 South Bridge to the VIA K8M890 North Bridge, the Ultra V-Link interface delivers the necessary bandwidth and low latency required by today's increasingly demanding multimedia applications.

    Native Serial ATA/RAID Support
    The VIA DriveStation™ Controller Suite with native four channel Serial ATA/RAID controller, provides direct support for four 150MB/s Serial ATA II devices. The V-RAID controller features native RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 0+1, RAID 5 and JBOD, ensuring optimum data integrity and system performance. The user friendly V-RAID software interface enables easy disk array configuration and management.

    VIA Vinyl Multichannel Audio Suite
    Delivering rich, warm surround sound at resolutions as high as 24/96 through up to six- or eight- channel outputs, the VIA Vinyl HD Audio surround sound and VIA Vinyl Gold HD Audio surround sound enables crisp, clear performance, representing the highest levels of audio quality in a mainstream integrated or onboard solution.
