VIA KN266 |
The VIA ProSavageDDR KN266 chipset brings ultra fast DDR SDRAM memory
to mobile systems based on the AMD Athlon™ 4 and AMD Duron™ mobile
processors for the first time, smashing the performance ceiling imposed
by PC133 SDRAM. In addition to better performance, DDR SDRAM also
lowers memory subsystem power consumption by more than 30%, extending
battery life and reducing heat dissipation enabling professional performance
in svelte and stylish designs. Combined with the proven performance
of the cost efficient, space saving S3 Graphics ProSavage8™ 2D/3D
engine integrated into the chipset North Bridge, the VIA ProSavageDDR
KN266 yields the most powerful professional mobile systems ever produced
at highly competitive price points.
The VIA ProSavageDDR KN266 offers up to 2.1GB/s of memory bandwidth
with its support for up to 4GB DDR266 SDRAM. This provides memory
intensive applications (such as content creation, media streaming,
3D gaming, etc.) the bandwidth they need to perform optimally and
increases the data throughput available to the integrated graphics
core.
The S3 Graphics ProSavage8™ 2D/3D Accelerator with internal AGP
8X bandwidth and Motion Compensation is optimized for use with
the Microsoft Windows® XP operating system and drives integrated graphics
in mobile systems to a new level. Shared Memory Architecture (SMA)
enables the KN266 to utilize the system memory for frame buffer and
texture memory on an internal data path doubled to 128-bit capacity.
Thus, the DDR memory subsystem, offering up to 2.1GB/s of memory bandwidth,
increases the overall performance of the integrated graphics core
by up to 50% over SMA chipsets based on PC133 SDRAM. Integrated graphics
also offers lower system power consumption by eliminating the separate
frame buffer memory, and saves real estate on the mainboard enabling
thinner lighter form factors. In addition, employing low voltage DDR266
SDRAM with AMD PowerNow! Technology lowers system power consumption
augmenting the performance increase with extended battery life and
usability.
The VIA ProSavageDDR KN266 also makes use of VIA's V-Link Hub Architecture,
which provides a dedicated 266MB/s bus between the north and south
bridge. Less advanced chipsets use the 132MB/s PCI bus as a link,
which must be shared with all PCI peripherals. VIA ProSavageDDR KN266
has a full set of networking and communication features with the exact
specification depending on your choice of VIA V-MAP 8233 Series South
Bridge. As standard these include Integrated 2 Channel AC'97 Audio,
Integrated MC'97 Modem, Support for ATA 33/66/100 and 4 or more USB
ports. Options include an integrated 3Com® networking MAC.

Benefits
of VIA KN266
Ultra Fast DDR Memory Performance
The high performance DDR subsystem of the VIA ProSavageDDR KN266,
with up to 2.1GB/s of bandwidth offers vastly increased performance
from AMD Athlon 4 and Duron based mobile systems. With twice the
bandwidth of PC133 SDRAM, multi tasking in the most advanced software
applications is as stable and fast as the very latest professional
desktop systems.
Low Power Consumption
DDR Memory operates at only 2.5V offering an immediate reduction
in power consumption. The VIA ProSavageDDR KN266 is also fully compliant
with AMD PowerNow! Version 2.0 realising the benefits of dynamic
power management and extending battery life even further.
Smooth DVD Playback and Gameplay
S3 Graphics ProSavage8 2D/3D technology with equivalent AGP 8X bandwidth
and DVD motion compensation enables stunning quality in key applications
like DVD playback alongside smooth gameplay on the latest 3D titles.
