VIA Vectro VT6205 World's First Low Power Certified, Hi-Speed USB2.0 Controller

Featuring ultra low power consumption levels, the VIA Vectro VT6205 raises the performance bar and saves battery life

Taipei, Taiwan, 2 March 2004 - VIA Technologies, Inc, a leading innovator and developer of silicon chip technologies and PC platform solutions, today announced that the VIA Vectro VT6205 9-in-1 Flash Card Reader controller has successfully gained Low Power, Hi-Speed USB2.0 certification from the USB Implementers Forum, making it the first USB2.0-enabled peripheral controller to be granted this globally recognized certification.

With notebooks and other mobile products being increasingly used for digital entertainment applications such as digital photography and video, consumers are demanding fast and convenient ways of transferring files to and from a wide variety of consumer electronics, such as digital cameras, MP3 players, PDAs and mobile phones, leading to the rapid rise in flash card memory types, such as CompactFlash™, MemoryStick™ and SmartMedia™. The unprecedented low power operation of the VIA Vectro VT6205 compliments this trend, allowing consumers to take full advantage of the widest range of compact flash card memory and portable storage devices, while maximizing notebook battery life.

Featuring a unique combination of power management capabilities, enhanced performance and value-added features, including interoperability with nine of the most popular flash media formats, the VIA Vectro VT6205 has been specifically designed with the rapidly emerging new generation of notebooks and portable storage devices in mind. Delivering excellent performance in Hi-Speed USB2.0 data transfer rates of up to 480Mbps and ultra low power consumption, the VIA Vectro VT6205 provides customers with utmost reliability, even in critical low power conditions, and also ensures longer battery life for mobile systems.

"VIA is leveraging its leading position in advanced low power technology, from silicon level to processors, focusing on high performance and reliability while minimizing power consumption to ultra low levels," said Eric Lin, Product Manager, VIA Technologies, Inc. "The Low Power, Hi-Speed USB2.0 certification for the VIA Vectro VT6205 is another major demonstration of VIA's strength in low power technology and our continued commitment in driving the adoption of USB2.0 in the market."

The VIA Vectro VT6205 reads and transfers data at Hi-Speed USB2.0 transfer rates of up to 480Mbps, while maintaining very low operating power consumption of just 90mA and configuration power of only 60mA, which is less than a fifth of that of typical USB2.0 peripheral controllers. Through its low power architecture and advanced CMOS 0.22µm process technology, VIA has minimized the power consumption of the VIA Vectro VT6205 by more than 80% of the maximum allowable power for USB peripherals operating without the use of external power, making it the ideal solution for power sensitive applications.

About the VIA Vectro VT6205 USB2.0 to 9-in-1 Flash Card Reader Controller

Featuring VIA's low power architecture and advanced process technology, the VIA Vectro VT6205 optimizes power management, ensuring connectivity in critical low power conditions and where battery life conservation is crucial. The VIA Vectro VT6205 is available as an add-in PCI card or an onboard chip, providing the most flexible approach to incorporate USB2.0 connectivity into flash card readers.

Compliant with USB Specification Revision 2.0 and ATA/ATAPI Specification Revision 6.0, the VIA Vectro VT6205 renders support and is highly interoperable with CompactFlash™ Type I and II, Micro Drive, SmartMedia™, MemoryStick™, MemoryStick™ Pro, SecureDigital™, MultiMediaCard™, NAND Flash and xD PictureCard™ interfaces, all on a single chip. VIA and USB2.0

VIA has been a key driver of the USB standard on the PC platform, bringing integrated USB1.1 solutions to market before the mainstream supply of USB-enabled peripherals. Anticipating the industry transition to the enhanced USB2.0 standard VIA developed both integrated and discrete solutions, enabling consumers to move quickly to the faster transfer technology. Being a member of the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF), VIA remains committed to steering the industry-wide move towards adoption of the USB2.0 Specification, by developing both discrete and integrated USB2.0 solutions, providing OEMs and system builders with the most cost effective and flexible method of incorporating the higher speed USB2.0 technology into their desktop, mobile and consumer systems.

Delivering superior bandwidth capacity of up to 480Mbps, Hi-Speed USB2.0 is swiftly superseding the standard USB1.1 specification for the PC, enabling seamless connectivity to the installed peripheral base. This high-speed transfer technology is ideal for today's bandwidth-hungry peripherals such as video cameras, next generation scanners and printers.
