VIA Introduces VIA Vectro VT6214 Hi-Speed USB2.0 4-Port
Host Controller
Extending USB2.0 connectivity for desktop and mobile
systems, with Combo support for multiple options
Taipei, Taiwan, 5 April 2004 - VIA Technologies, Inc,
a leading innovator and developer of silicon chip technologies
and PC platform solutions, today launched the VIA Vectro
VT6214 Hi-Speed USB2.0 host controller for PCs and mobile
solutions, which can be used in combination with IEEE1394,
Serial ATA and Gigabit Ethernet controllers. Certified
by the USB Implementers Forum for Hi-Speed USB2.0 operation,
the VIA Vectro VT6214 enables consumers to incorporate
the latest communication technologies into their systems,
while providing seamless connectivity to the installed
peripheral base, as well as the new generation USB2.0-enabled
devices.
With support for the PCI and Cardbus (PCMCIA) interfaces,
the VIA Vectro VT6214 satisfies the peripheral interface
requirements of multiple markets such as add-in cards
and PCMCIA cards for mobile systems. The VIA Vectro VT6214
incorporates unprecedented support for extended communication
technologies, offering OEMs the flexibility to design
a wide range of add-in cards and PCMCIA cards that combine
USB2.0 with up to two additional leading edge technologies,
including IEEE1394, Serial ATA and Gigabit Ethernet, on
a single PCI card.
"VIA is striving to make the adoption of USB2.0
a hassle-free process, while providing our OEMs with the
utmost flexibility to incorporate a range of technologies
into single solutions," said Eric Lin, Product Manager,
VIA Technologies, Inc. "With just one PCI card consumers
can take full advantage of the latest emerging technologies,
such as Serial ATA, IEEE1394 or Gigabit Ethernet. Ensuring
excellent compatibility, VIA recommends the VIA VT6421
Serial ATA RAID controller, the VIA Fire VT6307 IEEE1394
host controller and the VIA Networking Velocity
VT6122 Gigabit Ethernet controller to be used in combinations
with the VIA Vectro VT6214."
The VIA Vectro VT6214 proves versatile in application,
increasing productivity in the office environment by enabling
fast data transfer between PCs and printers or scanners,
while maximizing consumers' enjoyment of digital content
from their latest USB2.0-enabled MP3 players, digital
cameras and digital video recorders. The VIA Vectro VT6214
offers consistent Hi-Speed data transfer rates of up to
480Mbps to each of four downstream USB2.0 ports for PCs,
enabling the running of multiple bandwidth-hungry applications
simultaneously, while maintaining low power consumption.
In combo, the VIA Vectro VT6214 PCI cards deliver support
for up to three additional IEEE1394 ports, one parallel
ATA and two Serial ATA ports and one Gigabit Ethernet
port for Internet connectivity. Combo Cardbus modes feature
the VIA Vectro VT6214 and IEEE1394, supporting two USB2.0
and one IEEE1394 ports, maintaining low power consumption
for longer battery life for mobile systems.
About the VIA Vectro VT6214 USB2.0 Host Controller
Compliant with USB Specification Revision 2.0 and providing
enhanced performance through four DMA engines with pipelined
control, delivering consistently high data transfer rates
of up to 480Mbps to each of the four downstream USB2.0
ports, the VIA Vectro VT6214 supports multiple connectivity
with USB2.0 based peripheral devices. Based on VIA's low
power architecture and advanced process technology, the
VIA Vectro VT6214 USB2.0 host controller optimizes power
management, ensuring connectivity in critical low power
conditions.
In addition, the VIA Vectro VT6214 supports Combo solutions
with IEEE1394, Serial ATA and Gigabit Ethernet controllers,
while featuring PCI or Cardbus interfaces. The VIA Vectro
VT6214 is available as an on-board chip, an add-in PCI
card and a 32-bit Cardbus solution.
The highly integrated fully compliant USB2.0 Transceiver
Macrocell Interface (UTMI) supports high speed and full
speed communication, backward compatibility with USB1.1,
and allows for dynamic attach and re-attach to the USB
bus to allow hot-swap of peripherals. The External Serial
(EEPROM) Interface enables memory retention and supports
serial number, vendor number, product ID and miscellaneous
storage.

VIA and USB2.0
VIA has been a key driver of the USB standard on the
PC platform, bringing integrated USB1.1 solutions to market
before the mainstream supply of USB-enabled peripherals.
Anticipating the industry transition to the enhanced USB2.0
standard, VIA developed both integrated and discrete solutions,
enabling consumers to move quickly to the faster transfer
technology. Being a member of the USB Implementers Forum
(USB IF), VIA remains committed to steering the industry-wide
move towards adoption of the USB2.0 Specification by developing
both discrete and integrated USB2.0 solutions, providing
OEMs and system builders with the most cost effective
and flexible method of incorporating the high bandwidth
USB2.0 technology into their desktop, mobile and consumer
systems.
Delivering superior data transfer rates of up to 480Mbps,
Hi-Speed USB2.0 is swiftly superseding the standard USB1.1
specification for the PC, enabling seamless connectivity
to the installed peripheral base and the new generation
of USB2.0 enabled devices. This high-speed transfer technology
is ideal for today's bandwidth-hungry peripherals such
as video cameras and next generation scanners and printers,
and greatly enhances the performance of demanding applications
such as interactive gaming and digital photography. |
